Artist Amit Kalla will join 18th Painting Symposium of Mark Rothko : Sundip Sumahendra
Jaipur based Painter and Poet, Amit Kalla is one of ten global artists selected for the Painting Symposium and Residency at Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils, Latvia, the birthplace of modern abstract artist Mark Rothko.
This unique residency at the Mark Rothko Art Centre where the ten artists from world will participate in a transcultural environment to critically engage with ideas central to the Abstract Expressionist visual arts practice and will make paintings and gave talks about process, work, and influences.
For symposium participants, meeting creators from other countries and sharing a workspace in the art centre’s studios is both a blessing and a challenge. It will provide a chance to immense potential to broaden creative horizons and bring new insights to every participant. By using abstract, geometric and expressive language, the artists demonstrate the diversity of their individual creative styles whilst revealing their impressions from Rothko’s work and their Latvian experience.
It provides a space to explore and debate the role and purposes of contemporary art. Amit Kalla also aims to discuss his practice with other participants during the symposium.
All the ten selected Artists will live and work collectively in the fortress of Daugavpils and are tasked with creating work inspired by Rothko and the locality of Daugavpils. At the end of the symposium, there will be an exhibition curated from works created by the ten artists in the Mark Rothko Art Centre. Two of Kalla's works will become part of the permanent collection of the centre. The exhibition opening is on 16th September and will remain up through October.
The Symposium draws from both international and European-based artists and will take place at the Mark Rothko Art Centre at the Arsenal Fortress, in Daugavpils, Latvia - the town of Rothko’s birth Place.
